Francis C. Togneri, Sr.
February 17, 2010

Francis C. Togneri Sr.

TURNERS FALLS -- Francis C. ''Murph'' Togneri Sr., 83, of Turners Falls, died Wednesday (2-17-10) at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield.

He was born in Turners Falls, June 4, 1926, the son of John P. ''Big John'' and Helen (Koskober) Togneri. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Longina Togneri, in January 2010.

He graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1945, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and World War II.

He was employed by the Turners Falls Fire Department for 33 years, and as chief the last 17 years, retiring in 1987. One of Togneri's accomplishments during his tenure as chief was the opening of the modern fire station at Montague and Turnpike roads in 1976. Togneri succeeded Fire Chief George Reil in 1971, when the fire station was in an outdated building on Third Street. The building was so small that only one truck could be brought in or out at a time and vehicles had to be parked in the building with precision to get them all in.

Another accomplishment was the use of town encoders, a system of personal pagers for firefighters, instituted about 1976. Turners Falls was one of the first fire departments in the area to implement the paging system most departments have now and to do away with the signal horn. Previously, he was employed by George Starbuck & Sons and Herbert Hohengasser Plumbing as well as Architectural Stone Co. in his younger years.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church.

He was a charter member of the Montague Elks, was named the Elk of the Year and was the former chairman of the Montague Elks Youth Activities. He was a member of the Turners Falls Athletic Club, Turners Falls Schuetzen Verein and St. Kaziemerz Society. He was active in his earlier years in Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and the Newt Guilbault Baseball League.

Murph enjoyed golfing, fishing, shuffleboard or just chewing the fat with his ''nephews,'' all of which called him ''Uncle Murph.''

Murph is survived by his daughters, Mary J. Greene and her husband Rick, Anne Ambo and her husband Leon, and his son, Francis C. Togneri Jr. and his wife Kerry, all of Turners Falls. He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Shannon (Greene) Santana and her husband Jay of Northfield, Corey Greene and his wife April of Bernardston, Ryan, Colby and Devin Togneri of Westfield and Sarah and Brandon Ambo of Turners Falls; three great-grandchildren, Ava, Aden and Aliyah Santana. He also leaves behind his brother, John ''Slapper'' Togneri and his wife Ann of Longmeadow; his sister, Rose Zukowski and her husband Raymond ''Gump'' of Turners Falls, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
