GREENFIELD-Clarence D. Pierce, 90, peacefully passed with his family by his side on March 27, 2012 at the Buckley Healthcare Center. He was born in Vasselboro, Maine on February 10, 1922 the son of Everett and Lila Pierce. He graduated from Bucksport High School in 1941 and from the University of Maine in 1949. Clarence was a WWII veteran, 104th Timberwolf Infantry Division and was a member of the Timberwolf Infantry Association. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star European Theatre. He was a resident of Beverly and Peabody, MA for 40 years and previously a resident of Greenfield, MA for 13 years. Clarence worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad as a civil engineer responsible for bridges and buildings from North Station in Boston to White River Junction, VT. He retired in 1984. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and playing horseshoes. Besides his loving wife of 70 years, the former Esther A. Baker, he leaves his children, Catherine Townsley and her husband Richard, Sr. of Shelburne, MA, Everett C. Pierce and his wife Tammy of Bucksport, ME, Susan Steingass and her husband Timothy of Hedgesville, WV, Marion Carter and her husband Martin of Greenfield, MA, Nancy Martino and her husband Richard of Danvers, MA, Janet Pierce and her husband William of Wake Forest, NC, grandchildren, Richard Townsley, Michael Townsley and his wife Susan, Daniel Townsley and his wife Bree, Kimberly McCauly and her husband Don, Charles Pierce, Jennifer Steingass, Matthew Steingass and his wife Vanessa, Stephen Day, Ryan Pierce and his wife Jill, Michelle Martino, Courtney Martino, Richard Martino, Jessica Pierce, Meagan Pierce, Sean Pierce, Eric Pierce, great grandchildren, Madeline Townsley, Heather Townsley, Stephanie Townsley, Meredith Townsley, Danielle Townsley, Tyler Townsley, Owen Hoxie, and Andreas Bowen. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Jane F. Pierce in 2003 and his granddaughter Allison Marie Martino in 1996. Funeral services will be on Friday (3/30) at 9:45am at the Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St., Greenfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am at the Blessed Sacrament Church 221 Federal St., Greenfield with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, officiating. A private burial will be held on Saturday (3/31) in St. Mary of the Annunciation Cemetery in Danvers, MA. A calling hour will be held on Friday from 8:45-9:45am at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Franklin County 329 Conway St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
